Small Dog Training - How to get started

Many small dog owners make small dog training much harder than it has to be.  You’ve seen Paris Hilton carrying her small dog around in a purse.  Would you do anything else Paris Hilton does?  I didn’t think so!  Therefore, treat your small dog like a dog and not like a toy.  Small dogs are whiny and annoying because their owners trained them to be that way (not on purpose of course!).  You need to treat your small dog like a big dog in order to get the proper behavior from your animal.

Daily training is a must for small dogs.  That means you should establish a routine for training the dog and stick to it!  For example, every time the small dog eats and drinks, you should put your leash on the dog and take him outside to learn how to go potty in his special outdoor spot.  This type of consistent training will make house breaking easy.

Everyone knows the basic commands – like sit, stay and down – and now your small dog is going to learn them too!  Training a small dog to follow commands is based entirely on practice and repetition.  Many small dog owners realize that trying to punish a small dog when the dog misbehaves is not very helpful.  Most small dog owners want their puppy to be crate trained and house broken but punishing your pet when you're undergoing small dog training to train it is counter-productive.

And every time you do one type of activity, whether its read a book, use the bathroom, or eat breakfast, you should remember to train the small dog to go into its crate.  The crate should be the dog’s safe spot, where they can go to feel comfortable and happy.  Using a treat to entice the small dog into the crate, from the leash, is the best way to encourage a small dog to enter a crate.

So when you’re ready to begin crate training your dog, or teaching him not to bark, or to get the dog ready for house breaking, make sure your pet is ready too by getting him in the right frame of mind!  Small dog training should be fun and easy.
